The Colourful Lilac

The Colourful Lilac

Taken in my Mum’s Yard

I am a mother, retired foster mother, grandmother, and last, but not least, an author. I have self-published a children's book of rhymes, titled, A Rhyme In Time for ages five and up. I also wrote articles for Suite101, and had some short stories published in a local paper. At present, I am in a new phase in life once again. I hope to spend more time reading accompanied by Goodreads, write daily on my blog, and read other people's works of art. I also love photography and want to share some of my part of the world, along with travelling experiences.

So beautiful Drew. I have just discovered that my huge beautiful lilac tree is being eaten alive by little tiny worm-like black bugs, chewing away at all my leaves, any suggestions? 😦

Try spraying it with dish soap water. It might help but I know that right now, we are just getting started with tent caterpillars. They are the worse thing ever. To my knowledge, these bugs you are talking about are eating garden produce in Winnipeg and area. Also, I noticed some trees today that look like something is attacking them. Probably tent caterpillars. It almost makes you wish for winter, doesn’t it? Six months of winter and now mosquitoes so thick we can’t even go outdoors unless its windy and now these creepy, crawly destroyers. Malathion is the spray to use, but use sparingly. I hate to use this stuff but what does a person do?

Thanks for your advice. I have tried insecticidal soap already to no avail so I thought I may ask you for an option. My beautiful tree is shredded with holes in the leafs. It’s such a big tree I can’t even get to the top of it, the black eaters are under every leaf! So sad after our long await for spring and summer. Thanks Drew. 🙂

It’s such a terrible year with all the bugs and worms. If I were you, I would ask the forestry office what could be done. But when an infestation arrives, it’s almost impossible to control. If it was one tree, you might be able to do something, but if it is an infestation, the province has to deal with it. Sorry I can’t be of more help.
