Number Not Up

Crawled into bed early
With backache and fatigue.
Sleep took a hike,
Out the door
Joined a league.

Midnight arrived
Eyes peeled my nerves.
Too much to do
Why all these curves?

Threw a towel
Into the microwave.
Warmed it up
And curled back into bed,
With backache my slave.

Two hours later
Sleep still deprived.
What’s this I feel?
Charred fabric in hand,
No odour contrived .

Seized the bath towel,
Dashed into the washroom.
Poof! A ball of flames
In my quickened hands.
Turned the shower in a zoom.

Blanket I retrieved
Smoke filled the house.
I ran out the door to discard.
Blanket half charred,
And fire-alarm didn’t even wake the mouse.

Black hole in the sheet,
Another in the mattress cover.
A burn reached the mattress,
Where I laid upon minutes earlier.
My body unscathed, my mind left to hover.

I opened the windows
Turned on the fan.
Shocked and bewildered,
Tears blurred my vision.
Had I fell asleep, no longer would I walk this land.

I am a mother, retired foster mother, grandmother, and last, but not least, an author. I have self-published a children's book of rhymes, titled, A Rhyme In Time for ages five and up. I also wrote articles for Suite101, and had some short stories published in a local paper. At present, I am in a new phase in life once again. I hope to spend more time reading accompanied by Goodreads, write daily on my blog, and read other people's works of art. I also love photography and want to share some of my part of the world, along with travelling experiences.

Wow!! Is this a true story? Yikes! That had to be scary.

Yes, that is a true story. Do not put towels in a microwave to warm yourself. I put it in for too long, and I managed to live to tell the tale. But four adults in the house at time could have died that night.
